Smart Phones Enhance Holiday Shopping

New technology could have you doing your holiday shopping in a different way this season. A Springfield business is cutting edge when it comes to Christmas gifts.
"Phoning it in" typically comes with negative connotation. But in this case, retailers say it's actually a good thing. It means you won't have to scoop for cash or credit next time you order custard.
"You don't have a wallet full of cards," says Eric Reed, Director of Field Operations with Andy's Frozen Custard.
You can simply hand over your phone.
"We're offering what's called a virtual gift card," says Reed.
Andy's Frozen Custard says it's cutting edge for the region. A gift card purchased online goes to your email or mobile device, making dessert a little easier to swallow.
"The convenience of being able to buy something online and then come at your convenience to the drive thru or walkup window," says Reed of the attraction for customers.
Custard lover Leighton Clemons says gift cards are something he'd buy loved ones this Christmas.
"I think they would love it," says Clemons. "I don't know why they wouldn't."
But he's worried the technology might be too much to handle.
"That's a little out of my league," says Clemons. "I don't have that kind of phone."
No worries, says Reed. Andy's has been troubleshooting for customers with and without smart phones.
"You can print off the paper and we'll scan it at the window," says Reed.
Sweetening the deal with gift cards isn't the only way stores are going high tech this season. Other retailers are letting you price compare in the store on your phone.
"It keeps advancing every year," says Jim Henderson, manager of Sears in Springfield.
"We see it as far as they come through the store on dot com orders and they can pick it up by phone."
The retailer was a leader in offering a mobile site last fall. Managers hope that whether customers buy electronically or in person, catering to new technology creates an increase in business.
"We're hoping for a boost," says Reed.
Andy's says it took a little extra time to train staff how to use the new mobile scan. The technology also brings a slight cost increase the company will absorb. But, it says it's worth it as this catches on. 19% of Americans are expected to use mobile devices to shop this season.
